Where is Lubumbashi, Congo?

Lubumbashi is the second largest city (approximately one million people) in The Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo). Formerly Zaire, Congo was re-named after a successful eight month rebellion in 1997 that ousted the then dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.

Congo is located in central Africa and is as large as the United States of America east of the Mississippi. Lubumbashi is situated in the very south of the nation amidst rich deposits of copper and other minerals.

Congo is still in a state of flux following the rebellion, but the new government of Laurent Kabila is working to reestablish political, economic, and social infrastructures that were effectively destroyed as a result of years of corruption by the former regime. The economy remains very poor.
