" Let the mouth also fast from disgraceful speeches and railings. For what does it profit if we abstain from fish and fowl and yet bite and devour our brothers and sisters? The evil speaker eats the flesh of his brother and bites the body of his neighbor. "
( Saint John Chrysostom, d. 407 )

Lenten Regulations

The teaching of the Holy Father may be simply paraphrased: the obligation to do penance is a serious one; the obligation to observe, as a whole or "substantially", the penitential days specified by the Church is also serious. No one should be scrupulous in this regard; failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious; rather it is the failure to observe a substantial number of penitential days which must be considered serious. People should seek to do more rather than less.

A Prayer for the Thursday after Ash Wednesday

Direct our actions, Lord, by your holy inspiration
and carry them forward by your gracious help,
that all our works may begin in you
and by you be happily ended.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.
