A. Outcome of treatment
Restoring health to stranded animals takes a great deal of time and effort. The eventual outcome of an animal depends upon its initial condition when rescued. Juveniles often have a better chance of recovery than adults.
B. Bird Adoptions
The main objective of the Strictly Bird Society's Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program is to return rehabilitated animals to a safe environment where they will never be abused or injured again.
1 . Before a bird is released, a Identification with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag button is attached to the bird, in the event future identification is necessary.
C. Birds that are not adopted
Chronically debilitated birds may be kept at Striclty Bird Society, or other NMFS authorized facilities, on public display or in off -exhibit enclosures.
D. Annual number of rescues
1. The number of birds rescued each year varies widely with weather conditions, food availability, animal population levels, and other factors.
2. Between 1990 and 1994, more than 3,000 abused/injured birdss were rescued by or brought to Strictly Bird Society. They alone received more than 960 Parrots and, following successful rehabilitation, adopted out 884
3. Strictly Bird Society . Aviculturists rehabilitate as many as 400 birds each year.
a. In 1995, Striclty Bird Society rescued 368 exotic birds. Of these, 242 (62%) survived, and 136 (86%) of the survivors were released.
b. In 1983, Strictly Bird Society rescued and treated a total of more than 500 animals. The marked increase in abused & injured birds was attributed to an El Nino event. This cyclic weather condition is characterized by a number of atmospheric changes, resulting in an unusually warm water current that causes fish populations to shift and food availability to decline (Nowak,1991).
4. Strictly Bird Society is one of the founding institutions of the Midwest U.S. Rescue/Adoption Network (MRAUS). Strictly Bird Society rescues 120 to 240 abused or injured exotics annually, primarily parrots. In 1990, Strictly Bird Research Biologist Dr. Daniel Odell received a Presidential Point of Light award from President George Bush for his work with the Rescue/Adoption Network.
E. Expenses
Strictly Bird Society covers all expenses of its Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program including staff, transportation, and facilities at an annual cost estimated at more than $3,000 to 10,000.
