Reforms in the Roman Church Mission

What we find is that even in the 1970s what Hurley was fighting against was still in existence.  "By 1974 the existence of two seminaries for the training of the Catholic priesthood, St. Peter's for blacks and St. John Vianney for whites had become both morally and financially untenable"12.  This illustrate clearly that in the Church there was what we can call Apartheid.  This is amazing because for many years the Church had been fighting against apartheid.  The question is which Apartheid the Church was fighting against if it was still like that in the Church where we find segregation.

"By 1977 the Catholic Church was in a vanguard of those liberal organization actively involved in a mission of reconciliation in an acutely divided society"13.  In other words we can say the Church started afresh the campaigns which aimed at restoring order which had been destroyed by Apartheid.   " Thus by 1977 the Catholic Church had formally rid herself of racial discrimination within her own institutions..."14.   One would agree with the point which says the Church got rid of the elements of racial discrimination and Apartheid, but we cannot be so sure about that.  This is because initially from 1948 when the National Party government took over the Church drastically against the policy of Apartheid, but only to find that the Church practices apartheid.   So that is why I say we cannot be so sure.  But anyway unlike other Churches the Roman Catholic Church played a major role in fighting against apartheid.

What we find in 1980s with the help of Bishop Hurley is what is called "Human Awareness Project and Diakonia"15 founded in 1980.  It was responsible for  providing resources like books and conducted research in factories influencing the society.  The project aimed at bringing about community development.  It made its resources available for the community who needed them.   It also provided the feeding schemes for the needy black community.  In other words we can say this project aimed at reviving the humanity inside the blacks which had been attacked by the government apartheid.  This was the aim to remind them that they are human beings like many other people in this world such as whites who used to regard themselves as superior to blacks.
