If you are interested in learning more about the Powder Coating process – read on and we will tell you what we do and how we do it.
1. Work is inspected, counted, cataloged.
2. Parts are loaded into cleaning baskets according to size shape and drainage direction prior to the five stage cleaning and Iron Phosphate treatment.
3. Basket is placed into tank #1 for 10-20 minutes at 150 degrees F. This tank contains a strong caustic solution.
4. Basket is then moved to tank #2. This tank is used to pressure rinse the parts. By using high pressure spray the dirt and oils are thoroughly removed from each part.
5. The basket then moves to tank #3 which is the iron phosphate stage (110 degrees). This tank is a mild acid with additional cleaners to do cleaning and deposit a conversion coating that is critical to the bond between the substrate and the powder as it is curing.
6. The basket moves back to tank #2 for a quick and thorough rinse.
7. Now the last tank – This sealer solution leaves the parts protected against flash rust prior to powder coating.
8. If the parts have cavities they are moved into the oven for forced drying.
9. Parts are now ready to be powder coated. At this point any masking that may be needed is done and the parts are hung on hooks and a quality inspection takes place to detect any defects, or problems.
10. The powder is loaded into the hopper and a static charge takes place as the powder passes through the barrel of the gun. This is similar to rubbing a balloon on your head then sticking it to a wall. The powder is applied to the part.
11. The parts are moved from the powder booth to the oven via racks, and baked at about 390 degrees for up to an hour depending upon the mass of the parts and the volume placed into the oven in each batch.
12. When the parts are removed from the oven they are allowed to cool then they are removed from the racks and inspected again for any defects. The final operation is to do any assembly that might be necessary then the parts are wrapped and made ready for shipment.
